On Thursday, a Costco store that recently opened in Kadoma, in the Osaka Prefecture of Japan, reportedly began selling Starlink's standard hardware, according to a report from Impress. Costco and Starlink did not respond to Insider's request for comment. On its website, Starlink says its standard hardware is best for everyday internet usage like making video calls, online gaming, and streaming, but it also offers more high-performance hardware that allows customers to use the internet even when they're on-the-go. Former Meta researchers who developed an AI language model for biology have launched a new startup and raised at least $40 million, Forbes has learned. EvolutionaryScale is led by Alexander Rives, who ran Meta AI’s protein-folding team until the tech giant shuttered the project in April. The founding staff of eight all come from the same unit, where they created a transformers-based model in the vein of OpenAI’s GPT-4 or Google’s Bard, but trained on data about protein molecules in order to predict the structures of other unknown proteins. They used it to create a database that today contains 700 million possible 3D structures– key puzzle pieces for developing drugs that could cure diseases, microorganisms that could clean up pollution or alternative ways to manufacture industrial chemicals. Roter had served as VP, Global Agency & Brand Partnerships at Snap, where he was credited with helping engineer its ads turnaround a few years ago; he and fellow VP Naylor were two of its top ad execs under then-chief business officer Gorman. Roter held senior sales posts at Twitter (now X) and ESPN before that. Advertisers have expressed frustration with the pace of Netflix's ad tier growth since the streamer's Basic with Ads offering was rolled out last November, three months after Gorman joined as president, worldwide advertising, bringing along Naylor as VP, advertising sales. Marketers are excited about having another high-quality ad environment with a desirable audience but have said the offering is still too small to justify big investments. Netflix said in August that it had signed up 10 million monthly active users to its ad-supported plan, with signups growing since Netflix began cracking down on password sharing in May. The streamer conceded in its last earnings call that its ad business is still small but that it sees the business eventually generating 10% of revenue. Continued here
