Its audacious goal was to understand the human brain by modelling it in a computer. During its run, scientists under the umbrella of the Human Brain Project (HBP) have published thousands of papers and made significant strides in neuroscience, such as creating detailed 3D maps of at least 200 brain regions1, developing brain implants to treat blindness2 and using supercomputers to model functions such as memory and consciousness and to advance treatments for various brain conditions3. Continued here Russia is becoming increasingly dependent on Chinese banks as its yuan borrowings more than quadruple    The volume of renminbi-backed loans to Russian financial institutions has more than quadrupled since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February last year.  China's 'Big Four' banks increased their combined exposure to Russia from $2.2 billion to $9.7 billion in the 14 months through March 2023, the Financial Times reported.  The increased usage of the renminbi in Russia's banking sector is in line with the nation's continued efforts to reconstitute its reserves with alternatives to the dollar.  Continued here Japanese Women Are Unpaid for $761 Billion Worth of Housework    Japanese women are missing out on around ¥111 trillion ($761 billion) in pay for a range of household tasks they do for free, an amount that’s roughly equivalent to a fifth of the country’s economy. While men also engage in ¥32 trillion of unpaid labor around the home, that’s less than a third of what women do, according to a Cabinet Office report. Together, the numbers reflect part of the wage gap between men and women in the world’s third largest economy, and they highlight the sheer amount of uncompensated work that gets done. In the report, the value of unpaid work was calculated based on the amount of time spent, multiplied by the average wage for each gender according to age. Continued here
